"This site can't be reached" with a DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN message means your browser tried to look up your domain name and got no answer. It is not the same as a 404 or 500 error from your website: the browser never even reached your server. The problem sits somewhere between your domain's registration, its DNS records, and the device you are using.
What Causes This Error
- The domain name was typed incorrectly, or does not exist.
- The domain has expired or was suspended.
- The domain's nameservers are not set correctly, or were changed recently and have not propagated yet.
- A required DNS record (usually the A record) is missing or wrong.
- Your device or browser is using an outdated cached DNS result.
How to Fix It
- Double-check the domain name. Confirm there is no typo, and that you are not missing or adding an extra "www."
- Confirm the domain has not expired. Look up the domain using any public WHOIS lookup tool. If it shows as expired or in a redemption period, this error is expected until the domain is renewed. See our guide on renewing a domain before it expires if that is the case.
- Check the domain's nameservers. If you recently moved the domain to a new host or changed nameservers, confirm they point to the correct location. Incorrect or half-updated nameservers are one of the most common causes of this error.
- Confirm the DNS records exist. If the nameservers are correct but the site still will not load, check that an A record (or the correct CNAME) exists for the domain in the DNS zone.
- Clear your device's DNS cache and try again. Your computer or phone may be holding on to an old, failed lookup. Restarting the browser, restarting the device, or flushing the local DNS cache often clears this immediately.
- Test from a different device or network. Try your phone on mobile data instead of Wi-Fi. If the site loads there but not on your usual device, the problem is local caching, not the domain itself.
If you or ZIPROF recently changed your domain's nameservers or DNS records, this error can appear for a few hours while the change spreads across the internet. This is normal and resolves on its own. It does not mean the change failed.
If you have checked all of the above and the domain still will not resolve after a full day, get in touch with support so we can check the domain's registration and DNS setup directly.
