If your hosting account includes Softaculous, you can install WordPress and dozens of other apps with a short guided form instead of uploading files and configuring a database by hand. Both approaches end with the same working app, but they differ in speed, control, and how much you need to understand about what is happening behind the scenes.
What Softaculous does for you
Softaculous is a one-click installer built into both cPanel and DirectAdmin. You pick an app (WordPress, an online store, a forum, and others), fill in a short form with your site name, admin username, and password, and Softaculous handles the rest automatically:
- Creates the MySQL database and database user for you.
- Downloads and uploads the app's files to the folder you choose.
- Runs the app's installer and fills in its configuration file.
- Can email you a copy of your installation details.
It also tracks what it installed, so later you can use it to back up, update, clone, or uninstall the same app from one place.
What manual installation involves
Installing an app manually means doing each of those steps yourself:
- Downloading the app's files from its official website.
- Uploading them to your hosting account via File Manager or FTP.
- Creating a MySQL database and database user, and noting the database name, username, and password.
- Opening the app in your browser and running its own setup wizard, entering the database details when asked.
This is the same basic process in both cPanel and DirectAdmin: create the database, upload the files, run the installer. Neither panel makes manual installation meaningfully easier or harder than the other.
When Softaculous is the better choice
- You want WordPress or another supported app running in minutes, not steps.
- You would rather not create and connect a database by hand.
- You want an easy way to back up, clone, or update the app later from the same screen where you installed it.
- You are new to hosting and want fewer places to make a mistake.
When manual installation makes more sense
- You need a version of the app, or a specific set of plugins/modules, that is not offered through Softaculous.
- You are migrating an existing site and need to place files and a database in a very specific way to match what you already have.
- You want full control over folder structure and file permissions from the very first step.
- You are comfortable with FTP or File Manager and database creation, and prefer not to rely on an automated tool.
Whichever route you use, keep the admin login details somewhere safe. Softaculous can resend them by email, but a manual install only shows them once, during setup.
Can you switch later?
Yes. An app installed manually will not show up inside Softaculous for one-click backups or updates, since Softaculous only tracks installs it performed itself. If you installed manually but want the convenience of Softaculous going forward, your simplest option is a fresh Softaculous install and then migrating your content across, rather than trying to "import" an existing manual install into it.
