It's easy to focus on how a website looks and forget the practical details that make it actually work for visitors and search engines. Before launch, work through this checklist.
Technical Basics
- SSL certificate installed, so the site loads over HTTPS rather than showing a "not secure" warning.
- Mobile responsiveness checked on an actual phone, not just by resizing a desktop browser window.
- All forms tested, including confirming that submissions actually arrive by email or in whatever system you're using to collect them.
- Favicon set, the small icon that shows in browser tabs and bookmarks.
- Custom 404 page so visitors who hit a broken link land somewhere useful instead of a blank error.
- Backups configured before you have real content and orders to lose.
Content Essentials
- A clear statement of what the business does, visible without scrolling on the homepage.
- Working, accurate contact details: phone number, email, and physical address if you have a location customers visit.
- An about page that explains who you are, even briefly. Visitors often check this before trusting a new business.
- No placeholder text or images left over from the build (dummy paragraphs, stock "lorem ipsum" text, or generic sample photos).
Trust and Compliance
- A privacy policy page, particularly if you collect any personal information through forms.
- Clear pricing or a clear next step if pricing isn't public, such as "request a quote."
- Social proof if you have it: reviews, client logos, or past work, even a small amount.
Search Engine Readiness
- A page title and meta description set for each page, not left blank or duplicated across pages.
- An XML sitemap generated and ready to submit to Google Search Console once the site is live.
- Google Analytics or an equivalent tracking tool installed, so you have data from day one instead of a gap before you started measuring.
Launching with a shorter, complete website beats launching with a longer one that has broken forms or missing contact information. Add pages later once the essentials are solid.
Once the checklist is clear, point your domain to the new hosting and do a final pass on the live site, since links and settings sometimes behave differently once real DNS is in place.
