How to Add a Blog Section to Your Website

Adding a blog to your website is one of the simplest ways to keep your content fresh, attract search engine traffic, and show visitors your business is active. How you set it up depends on whether your site runs on WordPress or is custom-built.

If Your Website Runs WordPress

WordPress has blogging built in, since Posts are a core part of the platform. You don't need to install anything new.

  1. Log in to your site's wp-admin dashboard.
  2. On the left-hand menu, hover over Posts and click Add New to create your first blog entry.
  3. Give the post a title, write your content in the editor, and assign a Category and Tags from the panel on the right so your posts stay organized as they grow.
  4. Click Publish when you're ready to make it live, or Save Draft to finish it later.

Most themes automatically display your posts on a page called "Blog," or on the homepage itself. Check Settings > Reading to choose whether your homepage shows your latest posts or a separate static page, with the blog living on its own page instead.

If a blog page doesn't appear in your site's navigation, go to Appearance > Menus and add the "Blog" or "Posts" page to your menu manually.

If Your Website Is Custom-Built or Static

If your site isn't built on WordPress, you have a few practical options:

  • Install a CMS alongside your existing site. You can install WordPress, or another content management system, purely to run the blog, while the rest of your site stays exactly as it is.
  • Add a lightweight blog feature to your existing code. If a developer built your site, they can add a simple post listing and article page that pulls from a database table or a set of content files, without touching the rest of the site.
  • Use a static site generator. These tools turn plain text files into finished blog pages, which you then upload to your hosting account like any other website files.

Subdirectory or Subdomain: Which Is Better?

Before you build anything, decide where the blog will live: in a subdirectory of your main site (for example, yourdomain.co.ke/blog) or on its own subdomain (for example, blog.yourdomain.co.ke).

For search visibility, a subdirectory is usually the stronger choice. It keeps all your content under one domain, so the authority your blog posts earn in search results benefits your main site as well.

A subdomain is still a reasonable choice if the blog runs on completely different software from your main site and keeping the two separate is easier to manage. If you go this route, you'll need to create the subdomain first.

See How to Create a Subdomain in cPanel and DirectAdmin if you decide to set your blog up on its own subdomain.

Keep It Updated

A blog section only helps your website if you keep publishing on a regular basis. A handful of old, outdated posts can look worse to visitors than having no blog at all. Only add one once you're ready to commit to writing new posts consistently, even if that's just once or twice a month.
