How to Add a Testimonials or Customer Reviews Section to Your Website

A testimonials section shows visitors that real customers trust your business, which matters even more when you're a small or new Kenyan business competing for attention online. You don't need any special software to add one: a few genuine quotes, placed well on your site, do the job.

Before You Start: Collect Real Testimonials

Don't invent or exaggerate reviews. Ask a handful of recent, happy customers for a short written quote, and always get their permission to publish it with their name (and photo, if they're willing).

  • Ask specific questions ("What problem did we solve for you?") rather than "Can you write a review?" - you'll get more usable answers.
  • Include the customer's name and, where relevant, their business or location (e.g. "Jane M., Nairobi"). Local detail builds more trust with Kenyan buyers than an anonymous quote.
  • Keep quotes short: one or two sentences reads better than a paragraph.
Never post a testimonial you didn't actually receive, or edit one so heavily that it no longer reflects what the customer said. Fabricated reviews can damage your credibility if a customer ever sees their "quote" doesn't match what they said.

Adding Testimonials in WordPress

If your site runs on WordPress, you have two practical options: a dedicated plugin, or a manual section built with the block editor.

Option 1: Use a Testimonials Plugin

  1. Log in to your WordPress dashboard and go to Plugins, then Add New Plugin.
  2. Search for "testimonials" and review a few options. Free plugins like Strong Testimonials or Easy Testimonials are widely used and let you add quotes, names, and photos through a simple form.
  3. Click Install Now, then Activate.
  4. Open the plugin's new menu item (usually named after the plugin) and add each testimonial as its own entry.
  5. Edit the page where you want the section to appear, add the block or shortcode the plugin provides, and Update the page.

Option 2: Build a Simple Section Manually

If you'd rather not add a plugin, you can build a basic testimonials section with the built-in block editor:

  1. Edit the page, click the + icon to add a new block, and insert a Columns block for two or three testimonials side by side.
  2. Inside each column, add a Quote block for the testimonial text, and a Paragraph block underneath for the customer's name.
  3. Optionally add an Image block above the quote for a customer photo or business logo.
  4. Click Update to save the page.

Adding Testimonials on a Custom-Built (Non-WordPress) Website

If your website was built directly in HTML, or with a page builder other than WordPress, you'll add the testimonials straight into the page's code. A simple, clean structure looks like this:

<div class="testimonial">
  <blockquote>"Their support team responded within minutes and sorted our email issue the same day."</blockquote>
  <p>- Jane M., Nairobi</p>
</div>

You can repeat that block for each testimonial and style it with your existing CSS. If you're not comfortable editing the page files yourself, use the File Manager in your control panel to open the relevant HTML file, or ask whoever built your site to add the section for you.

Where to Place the Section

  • The homepage, ideally above the footer where it's easy to spot without scrolling too far.
  • A dedicated "Reviews" or "Testimonials" page, especially if you have many.
  • Near your pricing or service details, where a buyer is deciding whether to commit.
