How to Change or Reset an FTP Account Password

You don't need to delete and recreate an FTP account just to change its password. Both cPanel and DirectAdmin let you update the password on an existing FTP account directly. Once you set the new password, update it in your FTP client too, otherwise your next connection attempt will fail.

In cPanel

1. Log in to your cPanel account.
2. Under the Files section, click FTP Accounts.
3. Scroll down to the list of existing FTP accounts and find the account you want to update.
4. Click Change Password next to that account.
5. Enter the new password in the Password and Password (Again) fields, or click Password Generator to create a strong one automatically.
6. Click Change Password to save it.

In DirectAdmin

1. Log in to your DirectAdmin account.
2. Click FTP Management under the Account Manager section.
3. Find the FTP account you want to update and click on its username, or select it and click Modify.
4. Enter the new password in the Password field, confirm it, and save the change.

Use a strong, unique password for each FTP account, especially if you share hosting with other users or store client files. Avoid reusing your control panel login password for FTP.

Update Your FTP Client

Changing the password in your control panel does not automatically update any FTP client where you've saved the old credentials. Open your FTP client (such as FileZilla) and update the saved password for that site, or your next connection will be rejected as a login failure.
