If your domain has expired, you can usually still renew it, but you'll be working against the clock. Registries hold expired domains in a grace period before releasing them for anyone else to register, and the longer you wait, the more it can cost you. Here's how to get an expired domain renewed and working again.
Why Timing Matters
Once a domain passes its expiry date, it doesn't disappear immediately. It usually goes through a short grace period, then sometimes a redemption period with a higher renewal fee, and only after that is it released for anyone to register. Your website and any email addresses on that domain stop working as soon as it expires, even though the domain itself may still be recoverable.
The exact grace and redemption periods depend on the domain extension (for example .com and .co.ke follow different rules), and they are set by the registry, not by ZIPROF. Don't assume you have unlimited time to renew.
How to Renew an Expired Domain
- Log in to your ZIPROF client area.
- Go to Domains and find the expired domain in your list. It will usually be marked as Expired or Pending Renewal.
- Click Renew next to the domain.
- Choose how many years to renew for, then proceed to checkout and generate the renewal invoice.

- Once payment is confirmed, the domain status will change back to Active. This can take a few minutes, but reactivation with the registry can occasionally take longer if the domain had already entered a redemption period.
After the domain is renewed, your website and email should start working again once the domain's active status is confirmed. If you don't see your site or email working shortly after renewal, contact ZIPROF support so they can confirm the domain has been fully reactivated with the registry.
If the Domain Has Already Been Released
If you waited too long and the domain was released, it's no longer yours to renew; it becomes available for anyone to register again. In that case you'll need to try registering it fresh, and there's a real risk someone else claims it first, especially if it's a short or popular name. If it's no longer available, you'll need to choose a different domain name or extension for your business.
To avoid going through this again, turn on auto-renew for your domain once it's active, so it renews automatically before the expiry date arrives.
