What Is an EPP/Authorization Code and How Do You Get One?

An EPP code, also called an authorization code or auth code, is a unique security code tied to your domain name. You need it whenever you want to move your domain away from its current registrar to a new one. Without it, the transfer cannot go through.

Why You Need an EPP Code

The EPP code exists to stop unauthorized transfers. Since only the registrant, or someone with access to the domain's account, can request it, it proves that you actually own the domain and have approved the move. Most domain extensions require one, including .com, .net, .org, and most country-code domains such as .co.ke.

Some domain extensions don't use EPP codes at all, and some registries handle transfers differently. If your domain doesn't use one, your new registrar's transfer form will usually tell you what it needs instead.

How to Get Your EPP Code from ZIPROF

If your domain is registered with ZIPROF, you can request the code from your client area:

  1. Log in to your ZIPROF client area.
  2. Go to Domains and select the domain you want the code for.
  3. Look for an option such as Request EPP Code or Get Transfer Code, and click it.
  4. The code is sent to the email address registered as the domain's administrative contact, or shown directly on the domain management page.

If you don't receive it, check that the contact email on the domain is current and correct, and check your spam folder before contacting support.

Before You Request It

  • Make sure domain lock, sometimes called transfer lock or registrar lock, is switched off. A locked domain will reject the code even if it's valid.
  • Confirm the domain isn't within 60 days of its initial registration or a recent transfer. Most registries block transfers during this window regardless of the code.
  • Make sure the domain isn't about to expire. An expired domain usually can't be transferred until it's renewed first.
Treat your EPP code like a password. Anyone who has it can move your domain, so only request it when you're ready to use it, and don't share it over email or chat unless you're sending it directly to your new registrar's transfer form.

Code Validity

An EPP code is usually valid for a limited time, often a few days to a few weeks depending on the registry. If it expires before you complete the transfer, simply request a new one using the same steps above.

Once you have your code, see our guide on how to transfer a domain to a new registrar for the next steps.
