What You Need to Register a .co.ke Domain Name

A .co.ke domain needs more than just picking a name and paying for it. Kenya's domain registry (KENIC) requires proof of who is registering the domain before it approves it, which is different from generic domains like .com. If you have your documents ready before you start, the process is quick.

Why .co.ke domains need extra verification

.co.ke is a country-code domain reserved for entities with a genuine connection to Kenya. To prevent abuse and keep ownership records accurate, the registry requires identification and, in some cases, business registration details before a .co.ke domain is approved. This verification step happens after you submit your order, and it's the main reason .co.ke registration can take a little longer than a generic domain.

What you'll need before you register

Have the following ready so approval isn't delayed:

  • A valid National ID or passport if you're registering as an individual.
  • A Certificate of Incorporation or business registration certificate if you're registering on behalf of a company, and the certificate name should match the domain registrant's name.
  • A valid email address you check regularly, since domain-related notices and renewal reminders go there.
  • A current physical address and phone number in Kenya for the domain registrant.
If the name on your ID or certificate doesn't clearly match the name you're registering the domain under, approval can be delayed while the registry asks for clarification. Double-check spelling before you submit.

How to register a .co.ke domain

  1. Search for your desired name to confirm it's available.
  2. Choose the domain and add it to your order, along with any hosting or email you want alongside it.
  3. Upload a clear photo or scan of your ID, passport, or company certificate when asked during checkout.
  4. Complete payment for the invoice generated for your order, using the invoice number shown on it.
  5. Wait for the registry to verify your documents. You'll get an email once the domain is active.

How long approval takes

Most .co.ke registrations are approved within one to two business days once payment and documents are both submitted. Incomplete or unclear documents are the most common reason for delay, so a legible scan or photo makes a real difference.

After your domain is approved

Once approved, your domain is active and you can point it to your hosting, set up email addresses on it, and manage its DNS records. You'll also want to note its renewal date, since .co.ke domains still need to be renewed annually like any other domain.

If you're not sure whether to register a new domain outright or move one you already own, see How to Transfer a Domain to a New Registrar. You can also start a .co.ke registration directly from the domain registration page.
