DirectAdmin lets you pick which webmail application opens when the Webmail link for an email account is clicked: usually Roundcube, SquirrelMail, or Atmail. If the app that currently opens isn't the one you'd rather use, you can switch it for any email account in a few clicks.
Why you might want to change it
Roundcube is the most commonly preferred option because of its modern, feature-rich interface. Some users prefer the simpler, lighter SquirrelMail instead, especially on slower connections or older devices. Changing the default doesn't move, copy, or delete any messages. It only changes which app loads first when you check that mailbox.
How to change the default webmail app
- Log in to your DirectAdmin control panel.
- Click Email in the left-hand menu, then click E-mail Accounts.
- Find the email address you want to update in the account list.
- Next to that address, click the small webmail icon or dropdown. It usually shows the logos of the apps available on your server, such as Roundcube, SquirrelMail, or Atmail.
- Select the app you want to set as the default for that account.
- DirectAdmin saves the change automatically. The next time the Webmail link for that account is used, it opens the app you just chose.
This setting applies per email account, not to your whole domain. If you manage several mailboxes and want them all to open the same app, repeat these steps for each one.
Comparing the available webmail apps
- Roundcube: a modern interface with drag-and-drop message handling, folder management, and a built-in address book. Suits most users.
- SquirrelMail: a lighter, older-style interface that loads quickly on slow connections and keeps the layout simple.
- Atmail: another lightweight option available on some servers, with a simpler calendar and contacts view.
If you don't see a choice
Some hosting accounts only have one webmail application installed, in which case there's nothing to switch. If no icon or dropdown appears next to an email address, your server most likely only offers a single app, and the Webmail link will open it directly.
Once you've picked an app, day-to-day webmail login works the same way regardless of which one you chose. See How to Access Your Webmail for the basic login steps.
