How to Fix "Cannot Verify Server Identity" When Setting Up Email on Your iPhone

If you see a Cannot Verify Server Identity pop-up while adding or using an email account on your iPhone, it means the Mail app checked the SSL certificate on your mail server and found a mismatch. Usually this is because the incoming or outgoing server name you typed doesn't match the name the certificate was actually issued for. It isn't a sign your account was hacked, and in most cases it's quick to fix.

Why This Warning Appears

Your mailbox lives on a shared mail server, and that server has one SSL certificate covering its own hostname (something like mail.yourdomain.com or a server hostname your host assigned you). The warning shows up when:

  • You entered mail.yourdomain.com as the server, but your domain doesn't have its own matching certificate, so the Mail app is comparing it against the shared server's certificate instead.
  • You typed the server name slightly wrong (a typo, missing letter, or extra www).
  • Your domain's SSL certificate recently expired or was reissued and your phone cached the old one.

Step 1: Confirm the Correct Server Name

Before changing anything, confirm the exact incoming and outgoing mail server names for your account. Check the welcome email you received when your mailbox was created, or your email settings in Webmail, which lists the correct Incoming Server and Outgoing Server values. If you're not sure, ask ZIPROF support for the exact hostnames rather than guessing.

Don't just tap Continue or Trust on the warning to make it disappear. That hides the message without fixing the mismatch, and it can reappear or leave your connection unverified.

Step 2: Update the Server Settings on Your iPhone

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Mail, then Accounts.
  3. Tap the email account showing the warning.
  4. Tap your account name again, then tap Advanced to review the port and SSL settings, or go back and tap directly into the Incoming Mail Server and Outgoing Mail Server fields.
  5. Replace the Host Name in both sections with the exact server name confirmed in Step 1.
  6. Tap Done to save.

Reopen Mail and check whether the warning is gone. It usually clears immediately once the hostname matches what the certificate was issued for.

Step 3: If the Warning Still Appears

  • Tap Show Certificate on the warning screen and check the expiry date. If it has expired, the certificate needs renewing on the server side, not on your phone, so contact ZIPROF support.
  • Delete the email account from your iPhone entirely and set it up again from scratch, since a stale cached certificate can sometimes stick around after an edit.
  • Make sure you're not on a public or office Wi-Fi network that intercepts secure traffic, since some networks can trigger this same warning for unrelated reasons.

If you're setting up your account for the first time rather than fixing an existing one, see How to Set Up Your Email on iPhone (iOS Mail App) for the full setup steps.
