Understanding Your Hosting Account: Disk Space and Bandwidth Limits

Every hosting plan comes with two main limits: disk space and bandwidth. Understanding what they measure helps you pick the right plan and avoid surprises as your site grows.

Disk Space

Disk space is the total storage your account uses on the server. It covers your website files, email accounts and their stored messages, databases, and any backups kept on the account. A typical small business website with a handful of email accounts uses only a small fraction of most plans, but an account with large media libraries, many years of stored email, or a big product catalog database can fill up faster than expected.

Bandwidth

Bandwidth (sometimes called data transfer) is the amount of data sent from your hosting account to visitors over a given period, usually measured monthly. Every page load, image, video, and file download counts against it. A text-heavy site with modest traffic uses very little bandwidth. A site with large images, video, or downloadable files, or one that gets a sudden spike in visitors, can use significantly more.

Checking Your Usage

Both cPanel and DirectAdmin show your current disk space and bandwidth usage on the main dashboard after you log in, usually as a bar or percentage next to your plan's total allowance.

What Happens Near or At the Limit

If your disk space fills up, you may be unable to receive new email, upload files, or save database changes until space is freed up or your plan is upgraded. Bandwidth limits work differently: exceeding them does not usually take your site offline immediately, but ZIPROF will contact you to discuss upgrading your plan if usage consistently runs high.

If you're approaching either limit, deleting old email attachments, unused files, and outdated backups is often enough to free up meaningful space before you need to upgrade.
