When you pay a ZIPROF invoice through MPesa Paybill, you'll usually get an STK push prompt on your phone asking you to enter your MPesa PIN. Sometimes this prompt fails, times out, or returns an error before the payment completes. Most of these errors are easy to fix on your end and don't mean anything is wrong with your invoice.
Common MPesa errors and what they mean
- Request cancelled by user: you (or someone else using the phone) pressed cancel, or the prompt timed out before you entered your PIN.
- Timeout or Request timed out: the STK push reached your phone but no PIN was entered within the time window, usually about 60-90 seconds.
- Insufficient funds or Unable to complete transaction: your MPesa balance is lower than the invoice amount, or lower than the amount plus the transaction charge.
- Wrong PIN entered too many times: your MPesa PIN has been entered incorrectly and your line may be temporarily locked from making payments.
- Network error or no prompt arrives at all: a temporary issue with your mobile network or the payment service, not with your ZIPROF account.
How to fix it and try again
- Check that your phone has signal and is not in flight mode, then wait about a minute before retrying.
- Confirm your MPesa balance covers the full invoice amount, including the small transaction charge MPesa itself deducts.
- If you entered the wrong PIN more than once, wait for the lock to clear (this is set by MPesa, not by ZIPROF) before trying again, or restart your phone if the prompt seems stuck.
- When you retry, double-check you're entering the correct Business Number (Paybill) and Account Number exactly as shown on your ZIPROF invoice, since a typo here can cause the payment to be rejected or sent to the wrong place.
- If you're paying through the MPesa menu manually rather than a prompt, go to Lipa na M-PESA, then Pay Bill, and re-enter the details carefully.
Always keep the MPesa confirmation SMS once a payment goes through. It has the transaction code, amount, and the Account Number you paid to, which support can use to trace a payment quickly if anything doesn't match up.
If MPesa deducted money but you still got an error
Occasionally MPesa will show an error or timeout on your phone, but the money is actually deducted a short while later once the network catches up. Before retrying a second time, check your MPesa statement or messages to confirm whether you were charged.
If you were charged but your ZIPROF invoice still shows unpaid after a few minutes, this isn't a fresh error, it's a matching issue between the payment and your account. See what to do if your MPesa payment doesn't reflect on your invoice for the next steps.
When to contact ZIPROF support
If you've confirmed your balance is sufficient, double-checked the Business Number and Account Number, and the payment still won't go through after a few tries, open a support ticket from your client area and include the exact error message and the time you tried to pay. See how to open and track a support ticket for how to do this.
